Remember as one of the B vitamins, it is proven effective for lowering LDL and raising HDL. It is also one of the cheapest drugs available for lowering cholesterol. But, without medical supervision it may not be totally safe. A dose high enough to lower cholesterol can cause extremely high blood sugar or liver damage.
Take vitamin E
Studies indicate that vitamin E may have a positive impact on lowering cholesterol when taken in fairly large quantities – up to 800 IU per day. This is more than you can get from your diet alone. Larger amounts do not seem to cause any harm. Further studies showed that even amounts of just 25 IU per day helps in preventing LDL from sticking to blood vessel walls. That amount is only slightly higher than the recommended daily amount (RDA) of 12 to 15 IU. It’s interesting to note that even that small amount has an impact on preventing that hardening of the arteries.
One study indicates that when 56 people took a calcium carbonate supplement, their total cholesterol went down 4 percent and their HDL increased 4 percent. That was taking a dosage of 400 milligrams of calcium three times a day with no harmful effects reported. That does refer to calcium carbonate.
Take a multivitamin – it can’t hurt
While you are building your calcium and vitamin E intake, remember the old standby, vitamin C. It is the number one immune system booster and also drives up HDL. A study of people who took more than 60 milligrams of vitamin C per day (60 milligrams is the RDA) had highest LDL levels.
Fill up on fiber
Remember several years back when oat bran was the latest craze for lowering cholesterol? Later studies arrived at inconsistent results, but the medical community does agree that soluble fiber, the kind found in oat bran, does help lower LDL and raise HDL. As little as three grams per day of fiber from oat bran or oatmeal can be effective. There are 7.2 grams of soluble fiber per 100 grams of dry oat bran and five grams of soluble fiber per 100 grams of dry oatmeal. There are other sources of fiber as well such as barley, beans, peas and many other vegetables. Corn fiber is also good for reducing LDL, lowering it by as much as 5 percent in a recent study. Researchers used 20 grams of corn fiber a day. That would be a bit difficult for the average user when you take into account that one serving of corn has three grams of corn fiber. But, every little bit does make a difference. Pectin, which is found in fruits like apples and prunes, reduces cholesterol even better than oat bran, as does psyllium which is the fiber you find in many breakfast cereals and bulk laxatives.
Reduce sugar intake
Many people don’t realize that sugar affects cholesterol and definitely affects triglycerides. Sugar stimulates insulin production, which in turn increases triglycerides. Men in particular, seem to be sensitive to this effect from sugar. The mineral chromium which helps to stabilize blood sugar, can also raise the level of HDL. 100 mcg of chromium three times daily can help to improve your cholesterol levels.
The jury is still out and the different schools of thought are still at odds regarding the benefit or lack of benefit to consuming alcohol. This suggestion has nothing to do with our previous discuss on red wine. A moderate amount may be helpful. The problem is that to one person a moderate amount might be a glass of wine with their meal, while to another it might be a half bottle of Scotch! Anything above the arbitrary “moderate” amount elevates serum cholesterol triglycerides and your uric acid levels as well as potentially increasing blood pressure all of which promote heart disease. So, the best bet would be to eliminate it totally.
There is positive evidence that exercise can lower LDL cholesterol and boost HDL cholesterol. Both aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming, bicycling and cross country skiing and strength training like lifting weights or using weight machines all promote the improvement of cholesterol levels. An analysis of 11 studies on weight training showed that this exercise lowered LDL by 13 percent and raised HDL by 5 percent. If you lift weights, use light to moderate weights and do many repetitions.
We Americans definitely have a love affair with our coffee! People who drink large amounts of caffeine (more than 6 cups a day) are far more prone to elevated cholesterol. That connection does not hold for tea drinkers. Limit your coffee intake to no more than one cup a day and eliminate caffeinated sodas entirely.
Most of the websites start by telling a simplified history of Hoodia and the San Bushmen who have used it for centuries. They often forget to mention that the San eat fresh Hoodia to suppress their appetite. They do stress the primitive and almost mythical powers of the San, however, as well as the great benefits they supposedly derive from eating Hoodia.
The websites will then tell you how their product is far superior to other products, as they are the only trustworthy source of real Hoodia. A nice touch is to explain how one can be scammed from unscrupulous Hoodia companies. They may then explain that only their product is grown by REAL SOUTH AFRICAN FARMERS (apparently it is important to stress this by using all capital letters).
Another common gimmick is the use of false comparison websites that purport to compare without bias a selection of Hoodia products. Check to see if you have ever heard of the organization doing the comparison, as some supplement distributors have been known to create fake organizations in order to direct business to their products.
Many websites seem to offer expert testimony on the effectiveness of their product. However, when examined carefully, either the experts are unnamed or they are quoted as to the effectiveness of Hoodia in general, and not the product being sold on the website.
Another card the nutritional supplements play is the conspiracy theory of the big bad pharmaceutical companies. Apparently, these companies believe in the effectiveness of Hoodia, but since they cannot patent it, will not try to release a Hoodia product unless they can synthesize it, which they can patent.
Careful reading of one website found that the makers of that supplement recommended combining a reduced calorie diet and regular walking of several miles with Hoodia. Apparently their product works best if you also eat properly and exercise!
Many websites claim to offer money back guarantees and free samples, but how easy do you think those will be for something you buy off the internet? It is best to assume that any money you send out will not be coming back, no matter your satisfaction with the product.
Most websites do offer a disclaimer, often in a very small font at the bottom of the page. A typical disclaimer will say things like
Please Note: The statements contained on this site have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Not intended to diagnose, treat, prevent, mitigate or cure any disease. Your actual results may vary. Please check with your physician before taking any diet pills or starting any weight loss program.
And finally, it is probably a good idea to be wary of outlandish claims, such as one website that claimed their Hoodia product would give you superhuman-like strength to make love all night long!
I recently caught up with Jon in New York City where he was training one of his professional clients. Jon works a bit differently from other trainers as he does not name many of his all-star clients.
They have all signed a strict non-disclosure agreement and as Jon puts it “If you have just one athlete that tests positive for a drug test your reputation is ruined. And while my guys are clean, I cannot risk my reputation on something I cannot control” (obviously referring to if an athlete were to take performance enhancing drugs behind his back).
So while most trainers are lying about who they train, Jon’s hiding them. I had a feel this interview was going to be good!
My purpose of this meeting was to get the scoop on performance enhancing supplements and what the average athlete can do to improve their game.
PR “Jon, thanks for taking time out to meet with me. Can you please start out by telling our readers a little about yourself?”
JD “Sure Phil, no problem. In short, I make athletes better. Even though I’ve built my reputation in baseball, my clients include athletes from all four major sports as well as Olympians. These athletes all call me when they absolutely need results.”
PR “So I presume the athletes you work with are all subjected to strict drug testing procedures.”
JD “That’s correct.”
PR “What’s your stance on performance enhancing drugs such as steroids and Human Growth Hormone?”
JD “Well there’s no question they work. However, they are illegal and banned by most organizations. So I will not work with any athlete who isn’t clean.”
PR “Doesn’t this put your athletes at a disadvantage? How do you get your athletes ready to perform against others who are clearly using these performance enhancers.”
JD “It’s certainly no easy task. My athletes all come to me wanting what every other athlete wants: increase speed, power, strength and muscle mass and a decrease in body fat, recovery time and injury rate. Obviously with performance enhancing drugs this becomes easier, but in my mind that’s not an option because it’s illegal and unethical. So we utilize a combination of unique training methods, proper nutrition and over-the-counter supplements.”
PR “Ah, over the counter supplements. Now that’s what I came to get the dirt on. What’s the deal with these anyway. There’s like a million and one company’s out there. It’s so confusing to figure out what works and what doesn’t. And, it seems whenever an athlete test positive they blame in on a ‘tainted’ supplement. What’s the deal here?”
JD “Well first of all if an athlete pawns his drug use off on a ‘tainted’ supplement he’s full of it. These guys know full well what’s going into their bodies. They are lying.
Second, you’re right. Choosing a supplement from the very crowded shelves can be downright impossible. The big secret is that almost every company is selling the same thing!
It all comes down to marketing. Very few companies have anything ‘cutting edge’ like they claim. Except for a few unique products, it’s all window dressing.
Of course I cannot tell you, or anyone else what supplements to use as I’m not a doctor, I can provide insight into what my athletes use. This of course is for informational purposes only, agreed?”
JD “First of all we start with the basics. Nothing fancy here. A multi-vitamin, omega-3 fish oils, creatine (5 grams per day is all that’s needed) and some protein powder when needed.
Then it gets interesting. Please realize I get boxes of supplements sent to me on a daily basis from supplement companies who want me to use their products with my athletes. They know that if they get my endorsement that means big bucks for them down the line. But I’m not for sale so I only use what have been proven to work for us and by the researchers. Even further we must know without a shadow of a doubt that the product is safe and is not banned from any organization.
It’s almost hard for me to give this away, but we’ve been using a combination of products from a small supplement company out of Texas called USPLabs. We ‘stack’ their Anabolic-Pump, PowerFULL and SuperCissus RX products and we are simply blown away with the drug-like effects they are delivering.”
PR “Sounds cool. I’ll have to check that out. Well, Jon I know you have to run, but I appreciate you sitting down with me so I could gain a little insight into your world.”
To begin with, let us add a qualifier to our term. In my opinion the best bodybuilding supplement has got to be a natural substance. If it is not natural, it should not be part of anyone’s program. I just don’t want something from a chemical lab going into my body. I don’t care how many competitors, sports figures or marketing gurus say they wont harm you. Don’t use them.
Okay. So what is the best “natural” bodybuilding supplement? With so many different types and brands that you can use to enhance your results, picking the best one can get a little confusing.
The majority of expert bodybuilders agree that the most effective body building supplement is protein. Protein is needed to get all of the muscle building enzymes to where they need to be. It also boosts your energy level and enables you to do more intense workouts.
Whey protein ranks right up at the top of bodybuilding supplements. It is a great protein source to add to your workout program. It is all natural and provides good results when it is taken in the right amounts at the correct times.
Creatine is another good natural body building supplement. It also boosts your energy level and helps combat fatigue to permit better, more effective workouts. Creatine is naturally produced in your body and taking a creatine supplement is encouraged for the best results in a natural body building routine.
Glutamine is another natural body building supplement that is used to get the maximum results from muscle building workouts. It works by bringing muscle building nutrients to the muscles to increase their mass and improve toning.
Protein, creatine and glutamine are natural substances and recommended supplements by many expert bodybuilders. There are several others that are questionable as supplements even though they may be naturally produced in the body.
The most talked about is testosterone. There is little doubt that testosterone builds muscle mass. There is much doubt, however as to its safety and how long the muscle mass stays viable. Then there are the side-effects to consider. If you work your body with intensity, it will naturally produce all of the testosterone that it needs to build muscle. So stay natural and safe and avoid synthetic testosterone and other hormones.
Another bodybuilding supplement that is gaining in popularity is nitric oxide. During an intense body building workout your body produces nitric oxide to help combat stress. Nitric oxide does this by dilating your vessels so they carry more blood and nutrients to where they are needed. This is what gives you the “pumped” feeling after a workout.
It will also give you the “pumped” feeling without the workout so many people are taking it as a supplement to get pumped without the workout. My recommendation? Avoid it and any other questionable supplement and build your muscles naturally. You’ll feel better and have a much longer, healthier life.
Picking the best bodybuilding supplement for your personal program has got to be your own personal decision. And it takes some research. Beware of all the claims in the muscle magazines. Most are owned supplement companies trying to sell you instant success. There is no such thing without work. A lot of hard work.
